Sylvanus lilium (Hanley, 1844)

Description:   Shape elongate, wedge-shaped, umbo at posterior third. Antero-dorsal margin straight to slightly convex, postero-dorsal margin weakly concave. Angulation from umbo to posterior end on both valves, shell twisted at posteroventral margin. Exterior with weak irregular commarginal ridges, stronger ventrally and on posterior end. Interior with muscle scars well defined, pallial sinus deep.  Hinge left valve with 2 cardinals, anterior one bifid, posterior 1 narrow; right valve with 2 nearly equal cardinals; laterals weak. Ligament external, short. Shell colour white internally and externally.

Size:                Up to 30 mm in length.

Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific. In Australia, from central WA around northern Australia to Sydney, NSW.

Habitat:           Restricted to sheltered waters. In NSW, found in harbours and estuaries, not on ocean surf beaches.

Synonymy:      Huber (2015, p. 732) created the new genus Sylvanus with this species as type and discussed the species and its synonymy in detail.
