Hedley, 1908 Description: Shape
circular, umbo slightly in front of midline; anterodorsal margin convex,
posterodorsal margin straight. Posterior end slightly flexed, weak;
ridge from umbo to posterior end very weak. Exterior peculiarly
sculptured with irregular concentric ribs on anterior half and oblique
radial ribs on posterior half. Interior purple, with muscle scars
well defined, pallial line obscure; pallial sinus obscure ventrally,
almost reaching anterior muscle scar. Hinge with 2 cardinal teeth
in each valve, 1 bifid; posterior lateral beyond hinge, anterior lateral
closer. Ligament external. Shell colour fawn or purple
with concentric darker bands. Periostracum marginal, thin, fawn.
Its sculpture, colour (depending on habitat and time in the sun on the
beach) and umbonal height vary slightly intraspecifically. Size:
Up to 19 mm in length. Distribution:
Indo-West Pacific. In eastern Australia, as far south as Trial
Bay, NSW. Habitat:
Most specimens are from beach washup. Comparison: This species is immediately recognisable by its unusual
