Theora lata (Hinds, 1843)

Description: Shell translucent. Shape elongate-ovate, posterior and anterior ends rounded, posterior much narrower. Umbo in front of midline. Exterior polished, with weak irregular commarginal growth ridges. Interior smooth, muscle scars and pallial line usually not visible; pallial sinus extends past midline. Hinge with small cardinal teeth, 1 in left valve and 2 in right; lateral teeth long in both valves. Ligament in 2 parts; dorsal part exterior, ventral part on prominent spoon-shaped projection. Shell colour translucent white.

Size: Up to 18 mm in length.

Distribution: In Australia, known from the eastern half of Australia, from near Darwin, NT, to Tas. Also recorded from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Java, Indonesia.

Habitat: In NSW, known from bays and estuaries in mud, subtidally. In Japan, in mud, down to 90 m depth (Okutani, 2000).

Comparison: This species differs from T. lubrica by not having the ridge internally, by being more tapered at the posterior end and more inflated.

Synonymy: Neaera fragilis A. Adams, 1856 and Theora nitida Gould, 1861
