Heteroglypta
contraria
(Deshayes, 1863) Description:
Shell
moderately inflated. Shape ovate-oblong, umbo slightly anterior
to midline; anterior end rounded, ventral margin straight or slightly
convex, posterior end truncated. Exterior with complicated
sculpture consisting of four sculptural zones: zone 1, on anterior end,
has weak curved radial ribs; zone 2, which is most of anterior half of
shell has weak oblique radials; zone 3, which is posterior half of
shell, has strong radials; zone 4, which is the dorsal posterior region
has very strong radial ribs. Interior smooth apart from incised
muscle scars and pallial sinus extending past midline. Hinge with
2 cardinal teeth in both valves. Ligament attached to small
external nymphs. Shell colour cream or (rarely) pale pink.
Periostracum not seen. Size:
Up to 20 mm in length. Distribution:
Indo-West Pacific. In eastern Australia, as far south as Sydney. Habitat:
Burrows shallowly in clean coarse substrates 6-30 m in depth and
probably deeper. Most museum specimens are from beach washup. Synonymy:
Previously
recognised synonyms are Heteroglypta hedleyi Iredale, 1929, H.
avecta Iredale, 1929, H. pansa Iredale, 1929, H. saltatrix
Iredale, 1929, all of which are based on variations in shape
