Paphies angusta (Reeve, 1854)

Description: Shape elongate-trigonal, umbo at posterior third. Postero-dorsal slope straight, antero-dorsal slope long, weakly convex. Exterior smooth, with weak commarginal growth ridges. Interior with pallial line and muscle scars strongly incised; pallial sinus fairly shallow, about one-quarter of shell length in depth; margin smooth. Hinge as for family. Ligament internal. Shell white. Periostracum thin, smooth, brown.

Size: Up to 33 mm in length.

Distribution: Endemic to Australia: Cape York, Qld, southwards and around southern Australia, to Fremantle, WA, including Tas.

Habitat: Lives in sandy beaches in the surf zone and below. They are active burrowers, rapidly reburying themselves when washed out by the waves. Commonly washed up on beaches.

Synonymy: The name Paphies angusta (Reeve, 1854) was selected by Hedley (1916) acting as First Reviser in preference to the name P. elongata (Reeve, 1854) and, although the latter is widely used for this species in 20th century Australian literature, it must be replaced by the former. Other synonyms are Mesodesma nitidum Reeve, 1854 and Amesodesma perfugum Iredale, 1930.
