Anapella cycladea (Lamarck, 1818) Description: Shell solid and heavy. Shape umbo forward of midline; posterodorsal slope convex, longer than antero-dorsal slope; angle from umbo to postero-ventral margin. Exterior irregularly covered with fine commarginal threads. Interior smooth, muscle scars and pallial line clearly defined, pallial sinus absent. Margin smooth. Hinge strong, as for family. Ligament internal, attached in deep socket (chondrophore) below umbo. Shell dirty white externally, white internally. Periostracum thick, brown, restricted to ventral margin. Size: Up to 35 mm in length. Distribution: Endemic to Australia: Narooma, NSW, southwards and around southern Australia to south-western WA, including Tas. Habitat: Common in estuaries and on mud flats. Comparison: This species is similar to Spisula trigonella, but lacks the serrations on the lateral teeth and lacks a pallial sinus in the pallial line.
