Eucrassatella kingicola (Lamarck, 1805) Description: Shell solid and heavy. Shape roughly triangular, somewhat elongate, well inflated, extended posteriorly, umbo situated in front of midline. Anterior dorsal margin straight, posterior dorsal margin slightly concave, ventral margin smoothly rounded, posterior end weakly angled. Lunule and escutcheon large and clearly defined. Exterior with a few regular commarginal ridges dorsally, then with weak and irregular ridges over rest of surface. Interior white, muscle scars well defined, the posterior one usually brown. Pallial line continuous, margin smooth. Hinge strong, crassatellid in form. Ligament internal, below umbo. Shell colour white. Periostracum thick, dark brown. Size: Up to 88 mm in length. Distribution: Endemic to Australia: Twofold Bay, NSW, southwards to SA, including Tas. Habitat: Subtidal, in sand. In Tasmania it occurs sufficiently shallowly to be washed up on beaches, but in NSW it is known only from below 30 m. Comparison: Eucrassatella cumingii is similar, but is a tropical species, found only in the north of NSW. Fig. 1: Twofold Bay, NSW in 27-64 m (C.049906) |
